Croatian police issue distressing statement: Killer hit baby's head with an ax, injured mother called for help

After the horrific murder in Zagreb of a one-year-old baby, the police reacted with a statement.

It says that on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, from 8:26 pm and over the following 12 minutes, they received several calls referring to domestic violence being perpetrated in the Pescenica settlement.

"The first call was made by a 42-year-old woman - the victim, who reported abuse by her ex-husband, who was probably intoxicated. After that, there were two more calls, one about a fight on the street, and then about the injuring of two persons with an ax," the police said.

They added that immediately after receiving the first call, police officers were dispatched to the scene of the incident, who, upon arriving there, determined that a 43-year-old man had struck a child and the child's mother in the head area with an ax. The victims were found in a serious condition and the police officers at the scene of the incident immediately started to provide first aid, and then, after the arrival of an ambulance, the victims of the crime were given medical assistance in the hospitals in Zagreb.

"At the same time, with the quick police actions undertaken in terms of the facts about the event, it was established that the perpetrator moved away from the scene and fled in an unknown direction in a private car with at the time unknown license plates," the police said.

Subsequently, information was received about the death of a man in a traffic accident on AC A3.

"At the scene of the man's death, an investigation was conducted by the on-duty deputy of the Prosecution in Zagreb and an investigative team from the Zagreb police department, and it was determined that this was a suicide. In the early morning hours, on January 5, 2023, information was received that the child died from her injuries," the statement added.
