Friends of Serbian man found dead in Bulgaria react: They say he was an outstanding athlete
D.G. (55), originally from Trstenik in Serbia, is the mountaineer who died in Bulgaria, Novosti has learned.
His body was found next to the body of Bulgarian tourist Plamen Hristov (68), on Mt. Pirin, not far from the Vihren Peak. The Mountaineering Club Ljukten from Trstenik, of which D.G. was a long-time member, was stunned by the news.
"We couldn't believe what we heard, D.G. was with us from a young age, a great man, a mountaineer, an ultramarathoner, he traveled the world," said the president of the club.
"We have no other information except the news that the tragedy has happened... Pirin is a mountain whose highest peak is Vihren, it is effectively a rock."
Weather conditions on Mt. Pirin can be very unfavorable when there is strong wind.
D G. has recently been living just outside of Trstenek, he ran a successful company. He was an avid mountaineer and ultramarathon runner, and he was especially into mountain running. Novosti's interlocutors describe him as an exceptional man and friend, an athlete.
His family lives in Austria. According to unofficial information, the family has been informed about the event and they are on their way to Serbia.
In Bulgaria, the media have been covering the tragedy for days. Plamen Hristov was reported missing on December 26. Rescuers tried to approach the inaccessible terrain for days, and on January 2 it was finally announced that two bodies had been found, one of them being Hristov.
The possibility that the Trstenik man actually died because he selflessly tried to help the tourist who found himself in trouble is not ruled out, but the investigation is ongoing.
