Serbian pilot Bora Djukic (60) was seriously wounded in Nigeria, when a United Nations helicopter he was co-piloting came under attack yesterday, it has been confirmed for Telegraf.rs.

The helicopter was attacked during a routine landing in Maiduguri, Nigeria.

During the incident, the attacker, a Nigerian soldier, killed a member of an NGO and a fellow soldier, before getting "neutralized" himself, the Nigerian armed forces announced on Twitter on Thursday.

Nigeria's army said it regretted that the incident too place, adding that happened in one of its bases in the northeast of the country.

Telegraf.rs has unofficially learned that the shooter opened fire at the helicopter and the passengers as they were disembarking.

The attacker then approached the Serbian to shoot him point blank, but his rifle got jammed, so he stabbed the pilot in the stomach twice with the bayonet before other Nigerian soldiers shot and killed him, thus preventing him from inflicting deadly wounds on Djukic.

The Nigerian Army has announced an investigation. The motive for the attack is unknown at this time.
