Telegraf has learned: Bjekovic withdaws his candidacy to become Serbian Football Federation (FA) head

Although only 24 hours ago it seemed that Nenad Bjekovic was to take the helm of the Football Federation of Serbia, FSS (Serbian FA) and that this would be a formality - the current vice-president of the FSS has meanwhile decided to withdraw from the election race!

Telegraf has learned that Bjekovic withdrew his candidacy for the position of the FSS president after the events on Monday, when the vast majority of delegates decided not to attend the Assembly.

A new session was to be held today at 2 pm, after "threats" from UEFA and FIFA were received - but that will only include the verification of delegates - while the election for the FSS president will be delayed until January.

Red Star (Crvena Zvezda) was the biggest opponent of Bjekovic as the head of the FSS, which Red Star Director General Zvezdan Terzic himself confirmed on Monday.

"A man who never hid his animosity towards Red Star (Bjekovic coming from city rivals Partizan FC) cannot be the president of the FSS. They can ride the wave of success of the national team to install anyone they want, but is that good for Serbian football? Is it normal or something done out of spite? Bjekovic is one of the three men that Red Star can never accept. Besides him, there are Tole Karadzic and Zarko Zecevic," the statement said, and added:

"They are good for Partizan, not for Serbian football and Red Star. I am the general manager of FC Red Star and president of the Sporting Association Red Star, is it appropriate that I lead the most powerful institution and remain silent about the fact that Bjekovic should be at the helm of the FSS, Sasa Danilovic, as one of the biggest names in the history of Partizan Basketball Club, and Zarko Zecevic (another Partizan figure) as the vice-president of the Olympic Committee of Serbia?," asked asked Terzic.
