The town of Leskovac was hit by as many as seven earthquakes in three days. All this happened from October 13 to 16, and the strongest was an M2.4 tremor.

Seismologist Slavica Radovanovic tells Telegraf.rs that this does not mean that Leskovac itself will be hit by a strong earthquake in the future, but adds that this could happen in the wider area around it.

Earthquakes in Leskovac occurred in Stajkovci, Zlocudovo and Donje Krajince.

There were four in Stajkovci, two in Donje Krajince and one in Zlocudovo.

Seismologist Slavica Radovanovic told Telegraf.rs that these were definitely earthquakes and not shocks caused my mining, which also get recorded.

"For example, we had around 20 to 30 weaker earthquakes in Gruza within a few days and then it all ended. It's hard to say what could happen now. However, if we divide Serbia into eastern and western parts, they over there don't have as strong earthquakes as Kopaonik, Rudnik, Lazarevac... True, there are faults there, but it is a wider area, while around Leskovac there are the borders of that wider area were a strong earthquake is getting ready to happen," Slavica Radovanovic explains for Telegraf.rs.

According to her, the south of Serbia, which includes the area near Leskovac, is, conditionally speaking, the end of a zone that goes all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

"Along the southern slopes of Mt. Kopaonik, via Kosovska Mitrovica, Pec, then out to Shkodra. That is a high potential seismic zone but only in the part that ends at Kopaonik. One part goes through Pristina, there is a big fault there under Podujevo and Kosovska Mitrovica, then it changes direction and goes through Northern Albania to Shkodra. That is the seismic side all the way to Pernik," she says.

Radovanovic also spoke about the strength of that seismic activity.

"Our zone has a magnitude of around 5, there were no earthquakes in the past in our territory that would indicate higher seismic activity," explains Radovanovic.
