Will Serbia be hit by Covid and flu, and how bad will it be: Dr. Kon says it can be dangerous for some

The influenza virus will appear in Serbia this year as well, it was here last year, but nothing significant happened, and we hope things will be the same now, said epidemiologist Dr. Predrag Kon, a member of the Crisis HQ set up to deal with the coronavirus epidemic.

He stressed that it is quite certain that both viruses will be present in Serbia.

Asked what awaits us when the flu comes and whether the situation with the flu and the corona "colliding" will get complicated, Kon said that he does not expect it to significantly affect coronavirus.

"In our country, the flu can appear in October and November, when there are some new variants, but it most often appears in December and reaches its peak in February. This does not mean that we should not monitor what is happening with the flu. In Australia, for example, the flu was significantly more active than it was before Covid," Kon recalled in his statement for Tanjug.

He added that the flu will certainly appear and reminded that it was here last year as well, but that nothing significant happened.

"We hope that nothing significant will happen this year either, but it's quite certain that we will have both," Kon said.

Asked how important flu immunization is, he said that it is extremely important, especially for certain categories of the population. He explained that the flu can be dangerous for the elderly and those with serious medical conditions.

"It causes a disease that leads to a drop of immunity, and just as we have post-Covid, there is also a condition after the flu that lasts longer and can lead to very serious complications and death. That's why people over 65 and chronically ill persons are the ones who mostly get vaccinated. However, this coverage is much smaller in our country than what it should be, which would ensure complete protection," stressed Kon.
