"The debate in the parliament is an indicator of the progress of democracy in Serbia"
Political analyst Dejan Vuk Stankovic said today that the first day of the debate dedicated to Kosovo and Metohija in the Serbian parliament showed that we as a society have progressed in terms of democracy and added that the presence of the opposition in the parliament has contributed to this.
Stankovic said that he does not remember the last time there was intersecting of different opinions on an important topic on the political scene, such as this discussion on the Kosovo issue, and assessed that the opposition is responsible for this, because by entering the parliament it raised the bar of political expectations from the authorities themselves.
"Yesterday was a good day for Serbian politics, because we did not have this kind of discussion in the previous period. We have made progress in terms of democracy, which is a product of the last elections," Stankovic told TV K1.
Stankovic added that President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic showed at the session that he is not only a political leader of one option, but also has the potential to be a statesman in a democratic sense, and that he showed that the criticism of the opposition and a part of the public who are saying he is afraid of debating with political opponents, is unsustainable.
"He showed that as a political leader he can listen to everything that the opposite side says and defend his point of view, which is quite natural politically speaking," said Stankovic.
On the other hand, Stankovic points out, the opposition has shown that it can present concrete proposals related to the negotiation process, recalling that Vucic accepted some, while criticizing and rejecting others.
Stankovic referred to some criticism of Prime Minister Ana Brnabic for not attending the session and said that the president participated in all negotiations and that it is logical for him to inform the deputies and the public about it.
Stankovic noted that missing from the session was the president's explanation about what he discussed with the special advisers of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, adding that the topic of that conversation was probably to consider the "two Germanys" model.
He assessed that it is good that the deputies agreed that they are not in favor of recognizing Kosovo, but that the reality is different, because in the territory of Kosovo Serbian statehood can be seen in "traces."
"The attributes of Serbian statehood in Kosovo are barely visible, our army, our police, our judicial bodies are not there," said Stankovic.
