President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic said today in Brdo near Kranj, after a meeting with leaders from the region, that the essence of the discussion was how countries see Europe and what they can expect from Europe, and said that the EU is now less popular than ever among citizens of Serbia, but that our country will not abandon the EU path.

When asked by a journalist if he would come to this meeting next year, Vucic said that he would whenever someone invites him.

"When someone invites me, I'm always ready to talk and we had a nice polite conversation, and the essence of the discussion was how we see Europe and what we can expect from Europe. There are different expectations in the region. I come from a country that is on the European path and will not give up on it, but in which the EU is the least popular," he stated.

"Whether you like us or not, if Serbian citizens today voted in a referendum on joining the EU they would say - no. I hope that we will manage to change that in the months and years ahead," said Vucic.

He added that there are many reasons for the stance of the citizens of Serbia towards the EU, and that one of them is certainly the fact that today everyone in the EU is talking about the territorial integrity of Ukraine, even though in the case of Serbia, its territorial integrity was trampled on as if with a sledgehammer.

"People in Serbia cannot accept that kind of hypocrisy, but I hope that a rational impulse will activate among the citizen and understanding what our real interests are, and separate that from emotions," said Vucic.

He noted that he is trying to explain what is happening to the citizens in a reasonable way, but that today in Serbia, an unequivocal majority of citizens are against Serbia joining the EU.

And that majority has never been clearer, added Vucic.
