Reed, Siberian elms and storks – 3 trademarks of Belo Blato: An ethno-paradise an hour away from Belgrade
About 20 kilometers from Zrenjanin in the direction of Belgrade, on the edge of Carska Bara, is Belo Blato (Serbian; "White Mud"), a village that aspires to reach the top levels of ethno-tourism in Serbia.
Unlike other villages in this part of Vojvodina, which are perhaps even more beautiful but poorly developed in terms of tourism, Belo Blato managed to stand out as an attractive destination that gets visted by guests from all over the world.
The reed that Belo Blato is rich in is the main asset of this Vojvodina gem. Namely, the water surface surrounding Belo Blato is seven times larger than the land surface, which is why this village is called the "reed kingdom." Although the village has just over 1,000 inhabitants, more and more families are turning to making products out of this plant.
Another asset of Belo Blat are its storks, which are even celebrated during a special day. Every year at the end of March, the locals organize an event dedicated to these birds, which are a symbol of spring and good news.
The third, but certainly not the least significant asset from the point of view of visitors to Belo Blato is the main street "embraced" by Siberian elms. The groves created in the mid-1990s number about 900 trees, and there are more than 3,000 other trees in the rest of the village - a paradise for both the eyes and the lungs!
Finally, there is the traditional Banat cuisine, the star of which is the sumptuous strudel stuffed with walnuts, poppy seeds or cherries. Visiting ethno-households managed by members of multi-ethnic families is the right way to complete getting to know the big soul of Belo Blato.
