Minister Selakovic in Caracas: Several very important agreements signed with Venezuela
Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Selakovic met today in Caracas with his Venezuelan counterpart Carlos Faria, and on that occasion assessed that Serbia is especially grateful for Venezuela's consistent support for our positions regarding the issue of Kosovo and Metohija, which is for us an issue of first-class national importance.
"Non-interference in internal affairs of other states, preservation of sovereignty and territorial integrity, the right to a sovereign policy and respect for international law, not the 'might is right' approach, remain the basic principles of our state policy," said Selakovic.
At a press conference, Selakovic expressed his satisfaction that after 12 years, a Serbian foreign minister is visiting Venezuela, especially because of the fact that this visit is realized in the year in which we celebrate the 140th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
"During the long history of our diplomatic relations, despite pressure in different historical periods, we managed to preserve a high degree of mutual respect and appreciation on issues of key national interests," said Selakovic, recalling that such mutual respect dates back to the Non-Aligned Movement.
The minister pointed out that he and his Venezuelan colleague discussed issues of essential importance for both countries, ways of strengthening cooperation in the fields of economy and tourism, but also current regional and global circumstances.
Selakovic was particularly satisfied that several very important agreements were signed today, expressing his hope that these agreements will enable our two countries and peoples to get even more connected, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia said in a statement.
The two ministers signed the Declaration of Political Consultation Mechanism between Serbia and Venezuela, the Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Tourism, the Memorandum of Understanding in the Field of Youth and Sports, as well as the Cooperation Agreement between the National Library of Serbia and the National Library of Venezuela.
"And as Hugo Chavez once said, 'We will not create the great future we are looking for, if we do not know the great past we had' - so the foundation of our future relations, which we continue to build today, will be our friendly cooperation throughout these 140 years of diplomatic ties," Minister Selakovic concluded.
