Silver Lake is "Serbian sea," paradise for tourists: But there's also the dark side, it has claimed many lives
A teenager stepped into Silver Lake (Srebrno Jezero) last night at 9:10 pm when he sank and did not resurface. His body was found today. Silver Lake is sometimes referred to as "the Serbian sea" and it is a very popular destination, with the number of people going there having increased during the coronavirus epidemic, when it was not possible to go on vacation outside Serbia.
In early spring, Silver Lake is also a favorite of the capital's residents as a weekend destination for "recharging batteries." Some come just to have a cup of coffee by the water, some to fish, and some to enjoy local dishes, which are abundant there and are prepared according to old-school recipes.
Those who are eager to travel and get to know Serbian history, have the opportunity to visit the Ram Fortress, which is only 20 kilometers away from Silver Lake. The impressive medieval edifice, which according to many is the most beautiful fortress in our country, was renovated a few years ago, while preserving the spirit of ancient times.
However, although considered as an ideal vacation spot, Silver Lake has claimed a number of lives.
The teenager's body was found today just before 11 am. We learned that the boy was walking along the path and followed a ball into the water, when he sank. A cousin tried to rescue him, but he also began to drown so he got out of the lake.
The boy was a foreign citizen who came from abroad to visit his relatives.
The case that shook Serbia two years ago was the death of Marko K., who drowned in Silver Lake when he went out on a boat with his friends during the May Day holidays.
After drinking in a cottage, they headed to the other side of the lake when water started leaking into their boat. Marko's friends managed to reach the shore, but he was not so lucky. His body was found by Gendarmerie divers.
Stefan (14) and Nikola (13) drowned in this lake a few years ago. They fell out of a pedal boat they had rented with their friends. Their bodies were found after a 24-hour search.
The body of the younger boy, Nikola, was found first. His brother Stefan's body was found an hour later. In the meantime, an investigation was launched into the circumstances of this terrible tragedy.
It turned out that six boys rented one pedal boat, while four were in another. They went to the other end of the lake and there Stefan Petrovic, who was in the pedal boat with five other children, tried to jump over to the other vessel.
He slipped, most likely hit his head on the board and fell into the lake. His brother Nikola jumped in after him, hugged him and tried to pull him out, but they both perished.
