The opinion that Russia is our most important foreign policy partner is dominant in Serbia, and 80 percent of citizens do not agree with the position that our country should impose sanctions against Russia, the latest Demostat poll shows.

56 percent of respondents think that Serbia should not harmonize its foreign policy with the European Union, while 33 percent think that it should, said the head of the Demostat research team, sociologist Srecko Mihailovic, who presented the results in a news conference held in Belgrade.

One of the questions was what the government should do for Serbia to progress - to accept or refuse joining the EU - and Mihailovic said that 30 percent of respondents think this should be accepted, and 43 percent would refuse to join the EU, while 25 percent chose, "something in between."

"Respondents were intentionally offered the answer 'something in between' because the insight into the public opinion was such that a significant number of citizens are actually indecisive or have no opinion about it," said Mihailovic.

He added that the poll showed that, if a referendum was held tomorrow, 51 percent of citizens would vote against, and 34 percent in favor of joining the EU.

Demostat's poll, titled "Foreign Policy Orientations of Serbian Citizen," was conducted as a telephone survey from June 13 to 22, involving a representative sample of 1,203 respondents.
