Vucic: Vidovdan, our Golgotha and resurrection. For centuries they ask if we're celebrating victory or defeat

On Vidovdan (St. Vitus Day), our ancestors defended civilization and culture in the Kosovo Field, ancient, today we would say European, and certainly Serbian values, said Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, adding that Vidovdan is both our Golgotha and resurrection, morally and spiritually.

At the ceremony, at which he presented Vidovdan decorations, the president said that for centuries we have been answering the same questions each June 28 - whether on that day we are celebrating victory or defeat, heroism or futile sacrifice, betrayal or the only possible choice, reports Tanjug.

"From generation to generation, from politics to politics, the answers change, annul each other, form a cacophony of symbols and meanings of different versions of history, forgetting that history can only be one," said Vucic.

Because of this fact, he said, due to that unique and single history, he does not want to provide final answers, because we will not find them, but to say how important this date is and how much it means for the survival of the state and the future of the nation.

"Vidovdan is much more than questions and answers, it is the most important sign and symbol in the national sky, the one under which we gather and look for a reason and a way to exist. It is a signpost, a star whose splendor we follow... without it, with a history like ours, we would have long ago assimilated into other larger nations, or scattered into small tribes," said the president.

With Vidovdan and thanks to it, we found everything that makes a nation permanent, that allows it to last - both the cult we believe in and the adrenaline that allows us to resist danger, both the effort to build our home and eternal inspiration to carry on.

"Always, precisely on Vidovdan, throughout history, the Serb people had the opportunity to see everything. For us, Vidovdan is the most precise way of measuring time," said Vucic, adding that Bishop Nikolaj described it with these words:

"Vidovdan is our national Golgotha, and at the same time our resurrection, spiritually and morally. It stopped the moral disintegration of the Serb people, gave us a gallery of knights of faith, honesty and sacrifice, which is worth more than a gallery of marble statues made in peacetime by nations who did not have their own (Battle of) Kosovo."

Vucic said that our ancestors in the Kosovo Field (during the Battle of Kosovo in 1389) defended civilization, culture, ancient values, which some would call European, but certainly Serbian values, rather than "a small empire."

"Vidovdan is an ideal and a moral basis, Dositej, Vuk and Njegos refer to it in their desire to unite the Serbs," said Vucic.
