Serbia expects the harvest this year to yield 3.5 million tons of wheat, and in case of favorable weather conditions, there will be sightly more than seven million tons of corn, said Assistant Minister of Agriculture Vedrana Ilic.

Serbia also produces significant amounts of sunflower seeds, sugar beet and soybeans, Ilic noted and added that we currently have enough food for our own needs, but also for the entire region and traditional customers.

Serbia is one of the top ten producers of grains, as well as one of the biggest producers of raspberries, plums, apples and other fruit, which can significantly contribute to improving world food production, said Ilic, who participated in a video conference during the ministerial meeting in Berlin late last week of G7 countries.

"We have shown our willingness to cooperate and help through many activities so far, but probably the most important is the Open Balkan initiative, which helps develop the entire Western Balkans and is the most important regional project for Serbia. The initiative currently includes Serbia, North Macedonia and Albania and is open and accessible to all who want to join," Ilic said, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

Good neighborly and bilateral relations, she pointed out, are key to economic prosperity.

She stressed the need to harness the power of knowledge and improve food systems to provide safe food, accessible to all, while conserving natural resources and combating climate change, implementing and developing best agricultural practices, improving food distribution systems and reducing food waste.

The participants in the ministerial conference were invited to take further joint action in all these areas and to join the Global Alliance for Food Security (GAFS), which was launched in Berlin in May.
