Drina River Valley beauty heals both soul and body: How Banja Koviljaca became the queen of spas in Serbia
Banja Kovijaca (Serbian for Koviljaca Spa) is located on the right bank of the Drina River, at the foot of the Gucevo Mountain. It is one of the most important balneotherapy centers in Serbia.
Officially, it has existed as a health resort for a little over a century, but the spa tradition was born here in the Illyrian era, and the first written sources reveal that in 1533, people were coming here seeking to heal their health issues.
In the first half of the 18th century, the Turks built a bathroom in the territory of today's Banja Koviljaca and brought their wives to bathe in the healing water in order to treat infertility.
Today, Banja Koviljaca is a well-known health resort for all those who want to repair post-traumatic conditions and conditions after spinal surgeries, alleviate rheumatic diseases, motor neuron damage and solve fertility issues.
But, this Podrinje (Driver River Valley) beauty is not just a place where people come to improve their physical health. It is also extraordinary for enjoying the beautiful nature, which is why it has the unofficial title of the Serbian queen of spas for the soul and the body.
To come to Banja Koviljac, and not take a walk through the famous park that spreads on over 20 hectares under forest, in the central part of the settlement, means to miss visiting a unique natural museum. Namely, there are more than 80 species of trees in the park, as well as incredibly beautiful flower beds.
Once upon a time, all the paths in the park led to a large water cascade located at its center. In time, it was replaced by a fountain, which is today a recognizable part of the panorama of Banja Koviljaca, along the famous Kur Salon, where the first casino in the Balkans was opened and where the first Miss Yugoslavia pageant was held.
