An important highway to be built: From Belgrade, Pancevo and Vrsac directly to Timisoara

Serbian Minister of Construction Tomislav Momirovic signed in Timisoara an agreement between the Government of Serbia and the Government of Romania to build a 143-kilometer highway from Belgrade to Timisoara, the construction of which should begin next year.

The highway will connect Belgrade, Pancevo, Vrsac and Timisoara.

Roads build even stronger friendships and provide a better quality of life, and with the construction of a new modern highway from Belgrade to Timisoara, these two cities will be only an hour's drive away, Momirovic said.

"I feel privileged to be in Timisoara and I would like to express my gratitude to my colleague and the deputy prime minister of Romania for showing interest in building this strategically important corridor for both countries. As Mr. Grindeanu mentioned, since 2016, and earlier, there has been a strong willingness to connect Belgrade, but also Pancevo and Vrsac with Timisoara," stated Momirovic.

He expressed great gratitude to Romania for supporting for Serbia on its European path, the ministry said.

On this occasion, Momirovic also expressed great gratitude because Serbia has a strong partner in Romania when it comes to Romania's support for the principles of international law and Serbia's territorial integrity.

The agreement on determining the details for connecting the Belgrade-Vatin (RS) highway and the Timisoara-Moravica (RO) highway was signed in Timisoara by Minister of Construction Tomislav Momirovic and Romanian Minister of Transport Sorin Mihai Grindeanu, who said that the signing of this memorandum is very important because the project is moving from one stage to another, since in the beginning there was talk about building a fast road, and now this is about the most modern highway.

"I would like to thank Minister Momirovic for today's visit, the purpose of which is to sign an agreement that is of great importance for both countries. I know that in 2016 there was an initiative to sign this agreement, but the Romanian side did not consider this project a priority. We relaunched this initiative and feasibility studies are being carried out at the moment, which will be completed in the fall," Grindeanu said.

He expressed confidence that during next year a decision will be made about who will build the highway, and added that this is about European funding.

The contracting parties will establish a connection between the two countries by directly connecting the Belgrade-Vatin highway (state border), which will be 65 kilometers long on the Serbian side, and the Timisoara-Moravica highway (state border), about 78 kilometers long, on the Romanian side.

The two highways will cross the common state border and connect with each other, respecting the characteristics that ensure safety and security of road traffic. At the junction of the two highways, the contracting parties will build (operationalize) border crossings in the territories of the two countries.
