Americans are blocking Djokovic: US Open will not ask for exemption for the Serbian
Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic will not receive an exemption from vaccination in order to participate in this year's US Open.
According to the New York Times, Djokovic currently has no right to enter the United States and is treated as an "unvaccinated foreigner" according to the law there. For that reason, he is not allowed to enter, so he needs a special exemption to participate.
However, the US Tennis Association (USTA), under whose auspices the US Open is organized, will not seek that from the government, the daily reported.
"We are going follow the government and CDC directives," USTA Executive Director Lewis Sherr is quoted.
The latest from the US Open on Djokovic from my overnight piece: He is not able to enter USA at this stage. The USTA will not seek an exemption. Will follow government policy, which could, of course, change by late August.https://t.co/eCcUXXycIi pic.twitter.com/TGlwEGeuNW— Christopher Clarey 🇺🇸 🇫🇷 🇪🇸 (@christophclarey) June 15, 2022
At this year's US Open, the Serbian tennis player is defending 1,200 points he won last year when he was defeated in the final by Russian Daniil Medvedev.
When it comes to this season, Djokovic did not play at the Australian Open because of administrative problems and deportation, while he will not be able to defend his points at Wimbledon, where he won last year, because the ATP stripped the tournament of its ability to award points after Wimbledon organizers decided to ban tennis players from Russia and Belarus.
