Huge scandal avoided: Exhibition canceled in Ljubljana when it was noticed what would have been exhibited
An exhibition of works of art from a private collection was supposed to be organized at the National Museum in Ljubljana, Slovenia, but was canceled at the last minute.
According to Index.hr, a big scandal was avoided in this way, since, according to experienced experts, the paintings attributed to a number of great masters were "obvious forgeries," Slovenian media are saying.
According to the museum, 16 works of art from a private collection were to be exhibited, paintings by 19th and 20th century artisrts such as Picasso, Matisse, Miro, and others.
However, Slovenian art historians and critics said that these are allegedly forgeries, so the exhibition was eventually canceled, Slovenian media report.
The director of the National Museum said in a statement for the media on Wednesday that he was "sincerely sorry" because of the situation and that the opening of the exhibition had been postponed "indefinitely."
