It has long been known that bears on Mt. Golija have become quite "domesticated" and started approaching houses. Yet the surprises created by these forest animals never end. Milos Miletic from the village of Devici was surprised by an incredible sight, when he realized that a she-bear had broken into his house and taken away all the honey.

"When I went inside in the morning, I was shocked. The bear broke into the cabin, her traces are visible, and she made a mess inside. She broke some of the honey jars right there, and took the rest with her. She probably smelled the honey and rushed inside to take the food," he told RINA.

Although it is not uncommon for inhabitants of this mountain village to come across these animals, which often do great damage to their property, this is the first time that one has broken into a house and created chaos. Once bears start waking up from hibernation in the spring, villages in this area live in constant fear.

"There will be more bears than people here. The villages are getting abandoned and they are now getting closer than ever. This problem is repeated every year, but there seems to be no solution.

We are left to our own devices and to God’s will when it comes to these animals. They seem to be more protected than people and no one can do anything to them," said one resident of Devic.

The locals added that a potential solution to this problem could be to set up feeding grounds deep in the forest, so that bears don't feel compelled to seek food near the homes, and so that the locals don't get reminded every year what it's like when a bear gets "poked."
