They cross Drina River to buy flour, cooking, sugar, milk at lower prices in Serbia
Residents of Zvornik and other surrounding places in the RS (Serb entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina) are increasingly crossing the Drina River these days to buy basic food products in Serbia, which, due to a limitation set on prices, are much cheaper than in stores there.
In Serbian towns Mali Zvornik and Loznica, a kilogram of sugar costs around 1.50 KM (0.7 euros), while in Zvornik in the RS the price is 2KM, i.e. 1 euro. A liter of cooking oil in Serbia costs around 200 dinars (1.7 euros), while in RS it cannot be found for less than 5.5 KM (2.5 euros).
According to Poslovni Dnevnik, there are big differences in the price of other products such as bread, flour and milk, which is more than enough reason for residents of Zvornik to be crossing over to our country every day.
Brane Mihajlovic, president of the Association of Pensioners in Zvornik, claims that 90% of citizens are now buying basic food products in Mali Zvornik.
"Two loaves of bread in Mali Zvornik cost 70 dinars, which is about 1,20 KM while over here you can't buy one for less than 1.50 KM. Dairy products are 20% cheaper, and the prices of vegetables, flour, as well as almost all other foods are significantly lower," says Mihajlovic.
This mass "border crossing" for the sake of shopping is also confirmed by vendors in border places such as Loznica, Mali Zvornik and Priboj, stating that in recent months they have been stocking more food products than usual.
"Shoppers from the RS have been coming to our country en masse for months and mostly buy sugar, cooking oil and flour," said Zeljka Vasiljevic.
