Swimming is still forbidden in Ada Ciganlija but Belgraders ignore that: "I swam in March, water is great"
Official swimming season in Belgrade's Ada Ciganlija riverside resort starts in mid-June, but that is not stopping Belgraders from cooling off in the lake during the hot May days, although this is not recommended.
A large number of fellow citizens came to the city beach to cool off on this hottest May day so far.
They know that the season has not started, but pay not attention to the ban on swimming.
Some came precisely because this is the off season period.
"As soon as warm weather started, we came immediately. The water is great, it's not cold, we come until it gets crowded, until the season officially starts. In season, it's crowded," one girl told us.
"We open the season in March"
"For 30, 40 years, winter and summer we are on Ada, we open the season in March by swimming, and we close it sometime at the end of October, maybe even in November. The water is exceptional... This year we swam for the first time on March 23, water temperature was 10 degrees," said an elderly Belgrader.
However, the Administration of Ada Ciganlija is urging citizens not to do that.
"It is not safe to swim in this period, because we do not have lifeguards in the towers, nor an ambulance. The only service that works and and is warning swimmers is the security service. There have been no incidents, but the service reacts to any kind of bathing," said Maja Pavlovic, PR of Ada Ciganlija.
