US Ambassador Christopher Hill: Serbia is key investment destination in this part of Europe

US Ambassador Christopher Hill and President of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Serbia Stefan Lazarevic stressed the importance of Serbia's further progress in joining the EU during a meeting with businesspeople, members of the US Chamber of Commerce, and said that the United States will continue to support the Serbian government in all important reform processes that further improve the business environment.

"Serbia has become a key investment destination in Europe. American companies have invested over four billion dollars in Serbia and employ more than 20,000 workers. There is great potential for further growth," said Ambassador Hill.

He added that he firmly believes in AmCham's efforts to uphold US values, including creating a level playing field for all businesses, as well as promoting transparency, the rule of law, digitization, energy diversification and environmental protection.

"These are the principles that will help Serbia not only attract new companies, but also become a member of the EU, the largest trade bloc in the world," Hill said.

Lazarevic and Hill expressed full support for regional economic cooperation through initiatives such as Open Balkan, which aim to reduce barriers to trade and travel between countries in the region.

Hill assessed that Open Balkan has the opportunity to activate the entire economic potential of this region and attract even more foreign investments.

"AmCham Serbia is actively involved in encouraging regional initiatives such as Open Balkan. This initiative certainly gives great support to the EU accession process, and we will make sure to be a constructive partner and help remove all obstacles, which will enable this initiative to reach its full potential and encourage others to join it," stressed Lazarevic.

He thanked the US ambassador for US government's support to reforms and improvement of a competitive business environment.
