Dacic: I expect the new parliament to be formed during May

The president of the Assembly of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, said today that he expects the new parliament, based on the results of the elections held on April 3, to be constituted in May.

Dacic said that in the Assembly, where he hosted the students from the Belgrade Faculty of Law, to whom he said that the highest legislative body is currently at a certain standstill, because a new convocation has yet to be constituted.

Dacic recalled that the current parliament, whose president he is, was elected in June 2020 and did not last a full, four-year term, because it was necessary for the Assembly to be dissolved in order for the parliamentary elections to take place at the same time as regular presidential elections, as well as elections for the Assembly of the City of Belgrade.

As he said, decisions to dissolve the Assembly and call elections are made by different levels of the authorities, precisely in order to apply maximum democratic control to the election process and to respect the constitutional division of power.

Dacic called the presidential election, while the president of Serbia called the elections for the National Assembly, and Dacic also called local elections - for the City Assembly of Belgrade and several other municipalities and cities in Serbia.

For the sake of rationality and expediency, the elections were held in one day, April 3, said the president of the Assembly of Serbia.

Dacic explained that in the meantime, the current parliament has continued to work, although it does not pass laws, which is its most important activity, because the Government of Serbia, which proposes laws, is in a technical mandate.

"In order to avoid an institutional vacuum, this convocation of parliament will continue to work until the mandates of the new deputies, elected on April 3, are verified, and I expect that to happen in May," said Dacic.
