Russian energy giant Gazprom announced today that it has completely suspended gas deliveries to Bulgaria and Poland because they did not pay for the gas delivered in rubles, reports TASS.

"Gazprom Export has informed Bulgargaz and PGNiG about the suspension of gas deliveries starting on April 27 until the moment they make the payment as envisaged by the decree," the company said.

It is added that Gazprom Export did not receive payments for the gas in April by the end of the working day on Tuesday, April 26, when the deadline for settling obligations expired.

The Russian gas company warned that Bulgaria and Poland are transit countries, which is why "in case of illegal extraction of Russian gas from transit quantities for third countries, deliveries in transit will be reduced by the extracted quantity."

In the meantime...

"Hungary is receiving Russian gas according to the agreement with Gazprom through Bulgaria and Serbia, and Gazprom informed Budapest that transit deliveries through Bulgaria are processed separately," Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced today.

"I want to assure everyone that the suspension of gas deliveries to Bulgaria does not mean stopping transit deliveries through Bulgaria," Szijjarto wrote on Facebook, Reuters reports.

He added that Hungary has the next obligation to pay for Russian gas on May 22, and that the country will transfer funds in euros to Gazprombank, where the amount will be converted into rubles.
