Serbia marks Day of Remembrance of Victims of the Holocaust, Genocide and Other Victims of Fascism

Today Serbia marks Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, Genocide and Other Victims of Fascism, with the central ceremony taking place at the Monument to the Victims of Genocide in the complex of the former German Nazi camp Staro Sajmiste in Belgrade, led by President Aleksandar Vucic.

Vucic unveiled a memorial plaque dedicated to the victims of Jasenovac, which reads:

"From 1941 to 1945, the system of concentration camps and death camps of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) in Jasenovac was the most cruel part of the system of terror in the Second World War.

Many Jasenovac victims were carried by the Sava River to Staro Sajmiste, which functioned as part of the Jasenovac system for a while since the summer of 1942.

We are dedicating this bank to the victims of Jasenovac, to memory eternal, for generations to remember.

Citizens of Belgrade."

Vucic then laid a wreath at the Monument to the Victims of Genocide.

After that, wreaths were laid by President of the National Assembly Ivica Dacic, Minister of Labor, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Darija Kisic, Mayor of Belgrade Zoran Radojicic and his deputy Goran Vesic, representatives of the Association of Camp Prisoners...

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps, including Russian Ambassador Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko.

Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, Genocide and Other Victims of Fascism in the Second World War is a national holiday marked in Serbia on April 22.

It is dedicated to the memory of Serbs, but also Roma and Jews who died as a consequence of mass crimes committed during the Second World War in the Independent State of Croatia (NHD) and in the occupied Yugoslavia.

NDH was the only state to have special concentration camps for children (in Sisak, Jastrebarsko, and Gornja Rijeka).
