Unusual seizure at Gradina: Baby parrots, including those from protected species list, are now in Jagodina zoo
Serbian customs officers, in cooperation with the police, prevented an attempt to smuggle 37 newly hatched parrots, among them two Pyrrhura molinae birds, a protected species.
The violation was discovered when a Golf car with Bulgarian license plates was pulled over for a detailed inspection. A 37-year-old man was traveling to his country in the vehicle.
He told the customs officers that he had nothing to declare, but when they opened the trunk, they established quite the opposite.
Three large boxes with a total of 37 newly hatched parrots were found in the trunk, for which the driver had absolutely no accompanying documentation.
Most of the birds belong to the species Psittacula krameri - while two were Pyrrhura molinae chicks, that are on the CITES list of protected species.
The birds are now being cared for in the Jagodina Zoo, in cooperation with the inspectors from the Veterinary Administration, while the police are in charge of the person who tried to smuggle them.
