Tennis legend: If Nadal or Federer held this record instead of Novak, it would be talked about as unattainable
The best tennis player in the world, Novak Djokovic, entered the 363rd week at the top of the ATP list this Monday, which created a bigger distance between himself and Roger Federer, who held that spot for 310 weeks.
Novak is in good position to become a record holder in the history of tennis, as he now needs another 15 weeks to overtake Steffi Graf, who spent 377 weeks at the top of the women's rankings.
This is why legendary Spanish tennis player, now a commentator for Eurosport, Alex Corretja, spoke to say that Novak's record is not respected, and that the situation would be different if it involved Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal.
"I think that today, with everything that has happened to him in recent years, since the US Open 2020, the final he lost last year, this year in Australia... he is stronger than ever! I admire him deeply, because he says what he feels. He's not saying the right things to make people love him. You can agree with his way of thinking to a lesser or higher degree, but you cannot criticize him for being consistent in his principles."
"There is one thing about Novak that in my opinion will not be overcome for a very, very long time! Now he has been the world number one for 363 weeks! And this record went completely unnoticed. That is unfair. Because if that record was held by Nadal or Federer, it would be permanently highlighted as something unattainable and unsurpassed," Corretja said.
