They say that a sea used to be here: Rusanda is the largest salt lake in Serbia
In the immediate vicinity of Zrenjanin are Melenci, a town that became famous for the spa Rusanda, located on the shores of a salt lake by the same name.
It is little known that Lake Rusanda is actually the last remnant of the former Pannonian Sea, and the composition of the mud and of the water testify to that.
Namely, Rusanda is the largest salt lake in Serbia, while the mud that is extracted from the bottom and used in rehabilitation facilities is rich in sodium, magnesium, calcium, sulfur, iron...
It is interesting that the mud from the bottom of the lake is still brought up to the surface using boats, the traditional way, and that it is also returned to the lake after it has been used.
The Rusanda Spa became a health resort back in 1867, while the healing properties of the mud were confirmed at the Imperial Academy in Vienna.
Although at one time this spa was considered one of the most visited and well maintained, over time, it fell behind. But in recent years, Rusanda has regained its former glory.
A beautiful park with flower beds, benches and numerous paths is ideal for early morning and late afternoon walks, enjoyment of the sound of fountains and the chirping of birds of which there is a great number in Melenci...
