Novak to compete at Serbia Open: Player who helped him get back to top of ATP list coming to Belgrade, too
Just as we had assumed - Novak Djokovic will make the final preparations for the hellish month of May and the French Open at a tournament in Belgrade, where he will be the first seed at the Serbia Open, it has been announced by organizers.
There is only a little more than a month left until the beginning of the big tennis show in the capital of Serbia. On April 18, we will have the opportunity to watch "the upper class" of the sport converge here, and there is justified hope that Djokovic will be going for the trophy in his hometown in the final, to be played on April 24.
His path will not be easy at all, because Gael Monfils, Dominic Thiem, Christian Garin, Karen Khachanov, Dusan Lajovic, Filip Krajinovic, Miomir Kecmanovic and Laslo Djere will fight for the title along with Novak. For now, Matteo Berrettini, who defends the trophy, is not on the list.
Interestingly, Monfils defeated Daniil Medvedev in Indian Wells on Monday and helped Novak return to the top ATP rankings spot.
After almost a decade, the competition from the 250 series returned to Belgrade last year. Novak did not manage to win the trophy, he was eliminated in an incredible semifinal by Aslan Karatsev, while Matteo Berrettini then defeated Karatsev and lifted the trophy.
With considerable intervals, this will be the sixth overall edition of the Serbia Open. Novak was the winner twice, while Berrettini, Andreas Seppi and Sam Querrey were also successful.
The tournament is played on clay and the prize fund is 534,555 euros.
