Bajatovic: New contract with Russia from June 1, until then we're paying 270 dollars for gas
"Until June 1, Serbia will be receiving gas from Russia at the price of $270 per 1,000 cubic meters, as agreed, and by June 1 we will probably sign a new ten-year gas supply agreement with that country," said Srbijagas Director Dusan Bajatovic.
He noted that the price of gas on the market has never been as high as it is today and amounts to around 2,200 dollars per 1,000 cubic meters, adding that "Serbia will have enough gas in the coming period."
Bajatovic pointed out that the state started to secure reserves of gas and other energy sources in time, and that if someone "turned off the tap" now, Serbia would have reserves for the next 60 days.
He also stressed that no economy will be able to withstand the price of gas of 2,200 dollars in the long run.
Bajatovic said that gas in Serbia will not become more expensive until the end of the heating season, and explained that Russian gas covers a certain part of our needs, while we buy the rest on the market. He added that such a low price of gas, not only for households, but also for the economy - makes us more competitive and that this policy of lower gas prices has saved the economy, production and jobs.
"If you have production, then you trade, buy, refill the budget. If we didn't do that, what would happen? I cannot imagine that Serbia could be left without flour, oil, corn, meat, but it is very important to preserve industrial production and help agriculture," said Bajatovic.
