Today's ceremony marks the beginning of works on the section Sremska Raca-Kuzmin, which is part of a project to build the Belgrade-Sarajevo highway

President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic attended a ceremony which marked the beginning of works on the section Sremska Raca-Kuzmin, which is part of a project to build the Belgrade-Sarajevo highway.

After the ceremony, the president answered questions from journalists and spoke about current events in the country and the world.

About the region

When it comes to the situation in the region, he said that Serbia has no reason to raise the combat readiness of its Army, like Croatia has done.

"It'is nice that Plenkovic (Croatian PM) is following the events in the neighborhood, I could have invited him to the opening of some bridge. It's good that they do," said Vucic.

He reiterated that pressure on our country is enormous and will be difficult to endure.

"I had talks with several countries, until late at night... We will hold on as long as we can, we only have one country. It's not easy, it's not simple," Vucic said, regarding the events in Ukraine and the allegation that Serbia is sitting on two chairs.

About the elections

The president of Serbia and the leader of the SNS announced that his party, the Progressives, will make a decision about the candidate for the presidential elections on March 7, but he also noted that Serbia currently has bigger fish to fry than worry about the elections.

Asked whether he would start collecting signatures tomorrow, when the presidential campaign is expected to start, he said no.

"Of course we will not start, because we have not made a decision about the candidate," he explained.

He said that he scheduled a session of the SNS Presidency for March 7.

"Who wants deal with elections now, we have countless problems and troubles. Who cares about elections now, they will happen in a month," he stressed.

"We are building bridges connecting states"

"People think that we can build a highway out of air and water. Stone is always a problem, but it is up to us to take care and provide all the materials on time," the president said, commenting on the fact that the price of construction materials has gone up.

He said that Serbia, in proportion to its size, is a country with the largest number of bridges and roads under construction.

"Recently, some 55 km from here, we attended a similar ceremony for the fast road Sabac-Loznica, and today we are on a more important road. I want to say thank you to everyone who participated here, because we are networking the whole of Serbia, as well as states and peoples, with roads," said Vucic.

He added that bridges are more important than houses, as Ivo Andric once said.

"New bridge at Raca. Dragan Jocic, one of our greatest experts, assured me that this bridge is one of the best and most solidly built in Serbia. The complete section with all bridges and viaducts will be finished by the end of next year. Long live Serbia," the president said.
