An "air spa" 100 kilometers from Belgrade: The first coin with Cyrillic script was minted here
About a hundred kilometers from Belgrade, near Gornji Milanovac, is Rudnik, a mountain that was declared an air spa exactly a century ago.
Rudnik has as many as eight peaks, the highest of which is Cvijicev (1,132 meters above sea level), and two even have the same name - Javor.
The mountain is covered in beech, oak and maple woods, and intersected with green glades and clear streams, a special treat for mountaineers.
But, Rudnik is also a favorite destination for hunters, because there are numerous hunting grounds for big and small game.
Although there are several versions of how the mountain got its name, the most popular one has been that Rudnik (Serbian word for "mine") was named for the ores that it is extremely rich in.
Serbian King Dragutin minted his own money on Rudnik; the first Serbian dinar with a Cyrillic inscription was made here.
Seven years ago, during archeological excavations on Mt. Rudnik, a seal of Serbian Prince Lazar was found. The metal plate shows a unique helmet and is decorated with the image of buffalo horns, symbols used by the great Serbian prince. This seal is also proof that Prince Lazar stayed on Rudnik and issued his charters here.
