Roads to Mt. Golija blocked once again with snowdrifts reaching 3 meters: Strong wind creates "snow curtain"

Snowdrifts and strong wind in the Raska area have resulted in the blockade of several roads, and while yesterday the so-called Golija road got closed for traffic, now two roads leading to Golija from Novi Pazar and Raska are also blocked.

Snowdrifts are up to three meters high. The machines of the public company Novi Pazar-Put are working on clearing the roads, and it is expected that they will be passable by the end of the day.

Senad Ibragic from that company told RTS that the so-called Golija road was blocked yesterday due to strong winds and snowdrifts.

"It started snowing here on Monday followed by strong wind, and it snowed for almost 24 hours, with the wind increasing in intensity, so yesterday morning around 3 o'clock we considered the situation and saw that it was getting worse and at that moment we made the decision that it is safest for all traffic participants to close the road," Senad Ibragic told RTS.

He stressed that the wind blew so forcefully that it created a "snow curtain" and that at some moments there was no visibility at all on the road.

"This is a particular place, the snow seems to be pouring down only here onto the road. The wind mostly blows from the direction of Mt. Golija and brings in the snow," he adds.

He points out that the situation was similar in 2020 and that they reacted quickly because of that.

"We closed traffic so that 2020 would not happen again, when there were about 70 vehicles stranded on this road," Ibragic stressed and pointed out that there are no trapped cars now.

When it comes to the weather expected in the coming days, he says that according to meteorologists, the wind should stop today, but that this place is unpredictable.

"We still have problems on Golija, where a strong wind is blowing. Last night we tried to break through that road from Golija to Novi Pazar, but the wind did not allow us. This morning, we started again and we hope that during the day we will be able to do that and open it for traffic," says Ibragic.
