A subvariant of the Omicron strain of coronavirus has been discovered in Croatia, confirmed the deputy director of the HZJZ, Ivana Pavic Simetin.

She told Dnevnik.hr that she has information that Croatia currently has one case of a new variant of the virus.

The Omicron BA.2 subvariant has also been observed in neighboring Slovenia, and experts say it could be even more contagious than the first Omicron BA.1 strain.

Data shows that the BA.2 subvariant is 1.5 times more transmissible than the original Omicron strain called BA.1.

So far, there has not been enough data to determine whether BA.2 can re-infect people who have recovered the original Omicron.

The British Science Association has classified BA.2 among the "strains to be observed."
