Rtanj - mysterious mountain that rules eastern Serbia, which mountaineers call "thirsty"
Close to Boljevac, about 200 kilometers from Belgrade, is the mountain Rtanj, the most mysterious one in Serbia.
When viewed from a distance, Rtanj looks like a huge natural pyramid, hence the many legends given life by its shape.
The mountain that dominates eastern Serbia belongs to the Carpathian Mountains chain, and its highest peak, Siljak, is 1,565 meters above sea level.
According to legend, Rtanj is a mountain that is hollow inside, while all entrances to it are closed. In ancient times, again according to tradition, everyone who managed to pass through Rtanj was no longer the same person when they returned "among ordinary people."
Apart from being interesting to scientists who are trying to explain numerous phenomena that are happening on Rtanj - such as sudden discharge of batteries on mobile phones, shaking cameras, cameras that stop working..., this mountain is a treat for mountaineers as well. Despite the fact that it is not difficult to climb, it is known as a "thirsty mountain" because it is made of limestone and there is not a single stream on the path to its summit.
Although it is beautiful throughout the year, to those who have not yet visited Rtanj, it is recommended to do so from May until the end of October. At this time nature is the most lush there, well-marked hiking tails make it impossible to get lost, and you will remember the view from Siljak for the rest of your life.
