The first case of flurona in Serb Republic: Patient has both flu and coronavirus
A sample taken from a patient hospitalized at the University Clinical Center of the Serb Republic (RS) contained the influenza virus, RNA Influenza A (H3) as well as coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). The discovery was made today.
This is the first case of a simultaneous infection with these two viruses detected in the Serb Republic. The patients comes from Banja Luka, was born in 2000, and is currently conscious, in hemodynamically and respiratory stable condition, the clinic announced, Srpska Info reports.
Flurona, which is what this combination of viruses is referred to as, can be treated at home if there are only mild symptoms. However, more serious symptoms can develop, and they can include pneumonia, myocarditis and inflammation of the heart muscle, said the WHO.
"The Department of Clinical Microbiology of the University Clinical Center of the Serb Republic can simultaneously detect more than 20 parameters for diagnosing the most common viral and bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, using the device BioFire FilmArray Systems Biomerieux), within one hour. This significantly speeds up diagnostics and contributes to the quality of service. At the moment, we are the only institution in the RS that has this capability," the clinic said.
This healthcare institution stressed that the discovery of flurona is a confirmation that both viruses are in circulation among the population, and that there is the possibility of simultaneous infection with influenza virus and coronavirus, as has already been confirmed in other countries.
The first case of flurona has been confirmed in Croatia as well.
Recently, the first case of flurona was registered in Israel.
