Anthony Godfrey on Serbia-US relations: "Security cooperation at the highest level"

The US ambassador in Belgrade, Anthony Godfrey, said today that bilateral security cooperation between Serbia and the United States is at the highest level and that Washington does not object Serbia's the latest acquisition of weapons from Russia.

"We recognize that Serbia has opted for military neutrality. If Serbia wants to be a partner to Russia, we accept that as a decision of Serbia, but we also want it to be a partner to the United States. I can confirm that our bilateral security cooperation is at the highest level," Godfrey said.

He spoke for TV Prva, recalling that Serbia procures weapons and equipment from France, the United States and other countries.

Godfrey pointed out that the United States does not see Serbia as a threat, but wonders how neighboring countries perceive Serbia, whether they are asking what Belgrade's goals are and why it spends money on weapons rather than on infrastructure or energy.

"This is a time to invest in infrastructure and we are proud of the cooperation that Serbia has with the United States in that area, although we are also satisfied because we recently had a joint military exercise of paratroopers. But, I think that the priority is for Serbia to be a strong economic partner to neighboring countries," Godfrey concluded.
