Serbia and Russia sign agreements to build center for nuclear technologies in Serbia

The Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Russian State Corporation Rosatom have signed the General Framework Agreement to build the Center for Nuclear Technologies and the Agreement on the Establishment of a Joint Venture that will implement this project in the territory of the Republic of Serbia.

On the eve of the visit of Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabic to Moscow, the agreements were signed by Serbian government minister and President of the Intergovernmental Committee for Cooperation with Russia Nenad Popovic, and President of Rosatom Overseas Evgeny Pakermanov.

Based on the said agreements, during the next three years, the Center for Nuclear Medicine based on a cyclotron complex and facilities for production of radiopharmaceuticals will be built in Serbia.

A statement stresses that based on an agreement between Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the deals have been signed that put Serbia back on the map of European countries with capacities for scientific research in the field of nuclear technologies.

"This will increase Serbia's capacity in the field of medicine, science, research, and we already have requests from surrounding countries to use the capacities of this center together with our scientists. The signing of these agreements has opened new perspectives in the development of relations between Serbia and Russia in the field of nuclear technologies," said Minister Nenad Popovic.

"We are very glad to have together with our Serbian partners identified the concrete steps, as well as preliminary deadlines for the realization of the project in which innovative Russian nuclear technologies will be applied. The radiopharmaceutical complex and the Center for Nuclear Medicine will make high-tech medical care accessible to the citizens of Serbia, aimed primarily at battling oncological diseases," said Alexei Likhachev, General Director of the State Corporation Rosatom.

The future center will make a significant contribution to the development of the Republic of Serbia, it will use the most advanced technologies such as production of radioisotopes for medical and industrial purposes, production of alloyed silicon for industry, provide services for determining elemental composition of ores and minerals, as well as of environmental samples.

"Within our joint venture with the Serbian side, modern production of radiopharmaceuticals for diagnosis and treatment of various diseases will be launched. This will significantly contribute to the development of advanced nuclear medicine in Serbia and in the entire region. The beginning of works for the practical realization of the project is planned for 2022," said the president of Rosatom Overseas, Yevgeny Pakermanov.

The project establishing the Center for Nuclear Technologies is being realized within the framework of the Interstate Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the Russian Federation signed in 2019 during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Serbia.
