In the composite valley of Djerdap, on the border between Serbia and Romania, lies is the Kazan Gorge, which is part of the Djerdap National Park.

The gorge consists of Veliki and Mali Kazan, and the bed of the Danube in this part of the river is at the same time the narrowest and the deepest. Namely, the width of the second longest European river in the Kazan Gorge ranges from 150 to 170 meters, while the measured depth is about 82 meters.

As there are many whirlpools in this part of the Danube, it is not surprising that tourists describe Kazan as "the place where the Danube boils."

In addition to the unreal beauty of the river, the impressive appearance of this canyon valley is contributed to by the boulders about 300 meters tall.

The most beautiful view of Veliki and Mali Kazan is from the observation deck Ploce, which is located on Mt. Miroc. From the same vantage point you can see Roman Emperor Trajan's plaque, an inscription in Latin installed on a rock above the Djerdap Gorge.
