Faculty of Medicine on Delta Plus coronavirus strain: Has it been isolated in Serbia
Aleksandra Knezevic from the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology at the Medical Faculty in Belgrade told RTS that analyses of 30 samples taken during the last two weeks did not prove the presence of the Delta Plus strain, but confirmed the complete dominance of the Delta strain.
Considering that we have a large number of infected people, we can expect that this strain will be registered here in the near future, said Professor Knezevic.
The Delta Plus strain of coronavirus has so far been confirmed in more than 40 countries. It has gotten close to ours - a few days ago it was isolated in Croatia.
Although the virus knows no boundaries, the Delta Plus coronavirus strain has not yet been registered in our country.
"Based on epidemiological data, we had no doubt that the Delta Plus strain may be present in some patients," she said.
Knezevic said that the presence of Delta Plus strain is being registered in an increasing number of countries.
"Considering that we have a large number of infected people, we can expect that this strain will be registered here in the near future," Professor Knezevic pointed out.
Speaking about information so far about that strain, Knezevic said that it was identified in June 2021 in India and has been monitored since then.
Recently, there has been an increase in the frequency of this strain, data shows that there may be an increased percentage of the spread of Delta Plus compared to Delta.
She said that it is unknown whether the Delta Plus strain contributes to more serious symptoms, whether it has an impact on therapy as well as on the effectiveness of vaccination.
"It is assumed that vaccines protect in the same way as with the Delta strain," said Knezevic.
