Dr. Gligic on how epidemic may end: Either it will die down, or there'll be new strong mutation

The head of the laboratory at the Torlak Institute during the smallpox outbreak in the early 1970s, Dr. Ana Gligic, 87, says that the current epidemiological situation in Serbia is very unfavorable because, above all, not enough is known about the virus.

As the famous scientist explains, so far it has been determined that coronavirus mutated into eight variants, and through the number of new cases, people on ventilators and deaths, it can be seen that each subsequent variant is stronger and more deadly than the one before.

From reading the world's most prestigious journals every day and following the parameters of the epidemic, Dr. Gligic concludes that two scenarios are possible for the end of this epidemic, which is still not in sight.

"I predict two possibilities. Either the virus will die down, that is, the mutation will try to stay on humans, while new ones will no longer appear, and so it will die down over time. However, a different scenario is possible. That as early as by the end of the year a new mutation appears that will be so strong that everyone gets sick. It turned out that this virus is unpredictable and nothing should surprise us," Dr. Gligic told Objektiv.

The virologist stresses that she can now say with certainty that the virus is of a natural origin.

"Antivaxxers constantly point out how coronavirus is artificially created. However, if the virus had originated in the laboratory, it would have been locked. There would be no mutations. And the one who designed it would not just let it go, but would lock it," explains Dr. Gligic.

The scientist, who managed to beat Covid-19 in March after 13 days spent on oxygen, says that she is one of those who became infected after vaccination. According to her, she is sure that she contracted the infection in the period between the two doses, and that the fact that she was vaccinated saved her life.

"I should receive the third dose, but I will wait a little longer, since I am convinced that I have created a lot of antibodies and strong natural immunity. It is realistic to expect new vaccines in the months ahead, which will be made from the new strains of the virus," she concluded.
