The Commissariat for Refugees and Migrations commissioner, Vladimir Cucic, says that at the moment there are about 1,000 migrants in Serbia who are not in reception centers, some of whom are accommodated in hostels.

Cucic told Prva TV that there are between 600 and 700 migrants in hostels, while about 300 are near the border at exits from Serbia towards Hungary and Croatia, who are trying to cross illegally.

Regarding the events in Sombor, where two days ago posters with photos and data of of people renting apartments to migrants appeared around the town, Cucic said that several criminal complaints have been filed there "against persons who had illegal hostels" for migrants, but that there are also those who legally rent accommodation to migrants.

Cucic said that there is no way to put migrants who do not want that in state reception centers, and that in such cases it is better that they have a place to stay at their own expense - in hostels, than to for them to be "breaking into someone's weekend home or house," which has been happening.

"You also have about 300 people at various crossings, waiting to cross, but there's no way they can, legally. We have over 400-500 cases of preventing (illegal) crossings per day. Hungarians have just as many. No one can stop them, they have set out to reach 'a Germany'," said Cucic.

He added that there are no serious problems with the behavior of migrants, because "they will not risk committing a crime in Serbia" since they know that in that case they would be detained in the country.
