Spanish condition for so-called Kosovo accepted

Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez will participate in the EU-Western Balkans summit in Slovenia on Wednesday, where representatives of Pristina will also be present, but considering that Spain does not recognize so-called Kosovo as independent, its symbols will not be displayed.

As announced, Sanchez will travel to Ljubljana for a meeting of European Union leaders ahead of the summit with representatives of the Western Balkans.

In 2018, at the time Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was invited to such a gathering, but decided not to attend due to the participation of Pristina's representatives, reminds the Catalan daily El Periodico.

At that summit, all the symbols of so-called Kosovo were removed at Spain's request, and the same will happen again on Wednesday in Ljubljana, writes the Catalan daily.

Along with Spain, four other EU member countries do not recognize Kosovo: Greece, Romania, Cyprus, and Slovakia, the Spanish newspaper recalls.

However, although Spain does not recognize Kosovo as a state, it supports the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia. Spain supports EU enlargement to the countries of the Western Balkans, but the Spanish government explains that this week's summit is not held to talk about the possibility of membership, but about relations between the European Union and these countries.
