There are pyramids in Serbia as well: Only 7 are left, and their past purpose is still a mystery

There are many assumptions about what their purpose was, as very little information is available

That there are pyramids even in Serbia is something that hardly anybody knows. And there are as many as seven of them, which have been preserved to this day.

Apart from the area of the ski center Kopaonik and near Pozarevac, there are also some in the province of Vojvodina, mainly in Banat, Tornjos, Backo Petrovo Selo, Orom, Banatski Karlovac and Zagajica.

Although there had been many more in the past, today only these have survived.

Pyramids like chimneys

Although they have pyramidal shape, and hence are referred to as that, these structures are in fact very reminiscent of factory chimneys.

These are so-called geotopographic pyramids, which most probably date from the 18th and 19th centuries. During the existence of the Austrian Empire, geotopographic towers were built as a kind of markers mostly for making topographic maps. However, this is all based on assumptions, given that there is not much data revealing their purpose.

It is also assumed that they were used for signaling, but also that they may have been used for military purposes.

Made of brick and obelisk-shaped, this kind of pyramids are 15 meters tall and are placed on hills, most likely to make them more visible. They have bases made of stone, which may have been used to light fires on. Hence the assumption that they were used to make smoke signals.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Second Cadastre, also known as the Franciscan Cadastre, was created in order to record the entire territory that belonged to the former Austrian Empire. In these maps, the pyramids are marked as T.P, which is a cartographic term for triangular elevation, and as T.Z, which is assumed to be a mark for a geological date.

And although they undeniably still attract attention today, there is no doubt that this tourist potential has not been sufficiently used.
