One of the most difficult days in Nis since the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic happened yesterday, when 277 new cases were registered. Only in March the city had more 300 new cases within 24 hours.

Professor Dr. Radmilo Jankovic, Deputy Director of the Clinical Center Nis, told RTS that everything is a cause for concern and has been for a long time.

"Now the chickens are coming home to roost, no one can predict this intensity anymore. Terrible images appeared on social networks, last night there were 14 admissions in Krusevac (Covid hospital), ambulances from all cities waiting, there are no more beds there, there are 430 patients, 40 beds must be reserved for those in most serious condition," said Jankovic.

He said that KC Nis, after five months, will enter the Covid system again, as early as Friday.

"We already have 18 patients at the Infectious Clinic, we are probably opening one floor of the clinical center on Friday," the deputy director of KC Nis noted.

The situation with 277 newly infected people is terrible, says Jankovic, adding that the numbers in Nis will go far above 300.

"Nothing can be done now, we will find it difficult to stop this downward spiral, this is exponential growth that no one can predict," said Jankovic and stressed that the number of newly daily cases in Serbia will go over 10,000.

He reminds that in March, when the number of new cases was growing, there was a lot of pressure on the Crisis HQ to introduce drastic measures, and it took 10 days for the effects to show.

"Well, you do your calculation now," Jankovic added.

He also stressed that bans are not the only solution.

"People must come to their senses, I was not at the parents' meeting in my sons' school yesterday, because I think it was unnecessary and irresponsible to push 30 adults into one room, at least one of whom will not wear a mask just to prove a point," said the deputy director of KC Nis.

We're being taken off green travel lists

He pointed out that the state did the most by providing enough vaccines, and now we have contributed to being among the worst in Europe and being removed from green travel lists.

"One day we will show up on the cover of epidemiology and infectious diseases (boosks). That we have allowed them to remove us from the lists is the result of an atmosphere and the responsibility of everyone," stated Dr. Radmilo Jankovic.

Jankovic also said that it is easier for him to hear that someone doesn't want to getbe vaccinated, but that he cannot understand that the same person will be forcing others to do it, and that the social environment allows them to spread misinformation for days and weeks.

"There will be more than 50 deaths a day. We now see the effect of toxic messages, there is great responsibility on the part of the media, websites, there are many comments where people gloat, and someone will believe them," said the director of KC Nis.

Dr. Radmilo Jankovic thinks that the situation is dramatic and that it is very sad that young people are on ventilators. The strongest message, in his opinion, are the numbers and the ambulances waiting in front of Covid hospitals.

"Let's do something so that we're not the worst in Europe. Even that aside, but while there are so many dead it's business as usual, people are organizing weddings, where 15 people will (get infected), one will die, that atmosphere saddens and devastates me. We will do something, but we have little room for maneuver," stressed Dr. Radmilo Jankovic.
