Fresh round of coronavirus hell: Large Serbian hospital turns into Covid "red zone" once again
During the last six days, the percentage of positive coronavirus cases in relation to the number of people who got tested in the Jablanica District has been between 21 and 29 percent, which is similar to the statistics from back in April.
The director of the General Hospital in Leskovac, Dr. Nebojsa Dimitrijevic, has told RTS that as of today, that healthcare institution has reentered the Covid system, adding that 70 beds are ready to receive patients, the broadcaster reports.
According to him, in the previous period patients in a more difficult condition were transported to Krusevac, but all capacities there have been used.
"The Infectious Diseases Ward has already been opened for Covid patients, as well as the physical therapy building, and the Pulmonary Ward is also ready to receive patients," said Dimitrijevic.
He pointed out that the age structure of patients is from 25 to over 85.
"More severe cases are mostly unvaccinated people. They require oxygen support and some of them are even in intensive care," added Dimitrijevic.
According to him, over 90 percent of employees at the Leskovac General Hospital have been vaccinated, while a certain number cannot get the jab because of a prior condition, or because they recently recovered from Covid, and five percent have refused to be immunized.
"Such employees will only do administrative and other tasks, they will not be in contact with the patients," Dimitrijevic stressed.
Dramatic spike in numbers
Coronavirus was confirmed in 5,633 people on Wednesday in the previous 24 hours, and at the same time 24 people died as a result of Covid.
121 patients breathe through ventilators. 1,908 people are hospitalized with Covid.
