Archaeologists discover 38 tombs near Varvarin with preserved skeletons of men, women and children

As many as 38 tombs with preserved remains of adult men and women, as well as children's skeletons, have been found by experts from Krusevac and Belgrade near the Bedem site in the area of the village of Mascare near Varvarin, Novosti is reporting.

With these incredible discoveries, the protective archeological excavations on the route of the Morava Corridor have been completed, and the cemetery has been dislocated with all the skeletons sent to the Archaeological Institute in Belgrade for anthropological analyses.

According to archaeologist Dusan Kalicanin, an associate of the Archaeological Institute in Belgrade, the necropolis belongs to the site that contains a fortification and a church, and those buried there were Christians. The necropolis itself is organized according to the system of "graves in rows" which is characteristic of the 5th and the 6th century AD.

"It turned out that the necropolis was under a dense forest, and when that space was "cleared" we got the remains of two or three buildings next to the skeletons, which we can conclude based on the concentration of ancient plaster," Kalicanin notes.

"We came across an extremely interesting find in the shape of a brick with an imprinted cross."

Workers hired by the Bechtel Enka consortium that is building the highway also helped explore the part of the necropolis next to the retaining wall of the future Morava Corridor, which significantly sped up work in the field.
