Serbian ministry surprised by Twitter's move: "This is contrary to site's principles and purpose"
The Serbian Ministry of Culture and Information is surprised by Twitter move to label a number of media outlets in Serbia as "cooperating with the Government of Serbia." This applies to accounts that these media, their editors-in-chief and management have on this social network.
The Ministry announced that it would not go into what made that network arrive at censoring certain media in our country, from its original purpose to allow exchange of opinions and freedom of speech. The Ministry also pointed out that labeling media and their editors or management is undesirable and does not lead to democratic dialogue that Serbia as a society strives towards.
"The warning from Twitter that media accounts that carry this label will not be recommended to people or nor will the reach of their tweets be 'amplified' is contrary to the principles and purpose with which this network started," a statement said.
Twitter has put the saidlabel on a number of official accounts of Serbian media outlets including the public broadcaster RTS, the Tanjug news agency, TV Pink, dailies Vecernje Novosti, Informer, and others.
