The number of people infected with coronavirus in Serbia in the last 24 hours has exceeded the critical number of 1,000, which has been mentioned as the point when anti-epidemic measures would be made stricter. Experts were previously talking abour what measures we could potentially face after exceeding that figure.

Epidemiologist Branislav Tiodorovic stated earlier that, if that happens, opening hours of hospitality establishments will be limited and nightclubs would stop working completely.

"Nobody is even thinking about reintroducing a curfew, but, it seems there will be the limiting of the time spent in restaurants and the shutting down of nightlife again," said Tiodorovic.

Tiodorovic also mentioned that everything indicates that the Delta strain now dominates in Serbia and will strengthen, while new measures should be considered even if the number of 500 new cases is exceeded, and that number is 1,000, gatherings will be limited.

State Secretary in the Ministry of Health Mirsad Djerlek stressed yesterday that the new Covid wave is slowly picking up speed, and that there are more and more people in hospitals exhibiting a severe clinical picture. He said that it was evident that the epidemiological situation in Serbia had worsened in the past two to three weeks. He added that those who are infected are mostly returning from vacations, or having been going to parties.

Djerlek said that if the trend of an increasing number of infected people continues, we cannot keep the existing measures.

"We will monitor the situation, if there is such a fast growing trend, the number of people who can gather at weddings and events will have to be reduced," Mirsad Djerlek told RTS.

Epidemiologist and member of the Crisis HQ Dr. Predrag Kon stressed that the jump in the number of infected people is a natural course of events, but that "there has been a stronger acceleration, which is a consequence of our behavior."

"The measures are not respected and that is something that is well known. There is no will to implement these measures. With that in mind, it is debatable what can be done," said Kon and added that he was not under the impression that the Crisis HQ will make some "dramatic" changes.
