Amazing fact: Those born outside this circle will have a hard time winning Olympic water polo gold
Serbian men's water polo team have defended the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, which also saw a fantastic generation bid farewell to playing for the national squad - while confirming the dominance of our country in this sport over the last few years.
Counting the era of Yugoslavia, this is the fifth Olympic gold for Serbia, which puts us in second place on the all-time list, right behind the Hungarians who collected four more. From 2000 to 2008, our northern neighbors had a streak of three gold medals, Croatia was best at the London Olympics, and these facts aroused interest on social networks.
It has now been determined that all those who won the water polo Olympic gold from 2000 to 2021 were born in an, in global terms, small area that includes towns in Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Hungary, and Slovakia.
The majority were born in Budapest, Hungary - 14, followed by Serbian capital Belgrade and Dubrovnik, Croatia, with eight each. Four were born in Novi Sad, also in Serbia, and two each in Rijeka and Split in Croatia, and Szeged in Hungary. Dunajska Streda (Slovakia), Eger (Hungary), Kotor (Montenegro), Makarska and Pula (Croatia), Nis (Serbia), Miskolc and Solnok (Hungary) and Zrenjanin (Serbia) have all produced one gold medal winner each.
After Tokyo 2020 this map remains the same. All men’s water polo gold medal winners since 2000 were born inside this circle. https://t.co/9Kl9mNJy1J https://t.co/3mufoe4ZVj pic.twitter.com/rp1J7k4HvP— The Big Data Stats (@TheBigDataStats) August 8, 2021
The last time someone born outside this geographic circle won the Olympic medal was way back in 1996 in Atlanta, US, when Spain were the winners of the water polo tournament.
